PROJECT: FALMER HOUSE

CLIENT: UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX

Project Information

Arguably the gatehouse to the University and formal approach to Fulton Court. Falmer house was the first building on the campus to be complete 1960-3 by Sir Basil Spence and currently affords a Grade I listed status.

BLB Surveyors were entrusted to undertake a sympathetic refurbishment to replace the existing single glazed metal screens, eye-brow windows and louvered lights.  Other works included addressing spalled concrete banding, blown bricks, defective slate sills and friable repointing.

Our Building Surveying Dept worked in collaboration with English Heritage and Planning (Listed Buildings) to replicate suitable units, analyse mortar samples and advise on suitable concrete repair systems.

We have worked on a number of prestigious buildings across the campus including Chichester lecture theatre, Chichester I, II, Arts A, B & C.

Our findings have been adopted across the campus and form part of a landmark Listed Building Heritage Partnership Agreement with Brighton & Hove City Council and Historic England (formally English Heritage).

The deal is the second such agreement in the Country and the first involving a University. The agreement will last 10 years and should streamline future Planning Applications but ultimately protect listed buildings across the campus.
